Not just your basic paper snowflakes, templates to inspire you, Paper Snowflakes.

Glittery Window Clings, these look fun to do for other seasons and holidays as well.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Snow Activities

Snow Painting
Fill a spray bottle with water and add food colouring. Go outside and spray the snow. Use multiple bottles and fill with different colours for more fun.

Inside Snowman
If you have snow on the ground, but it's just too cold to play outside, go out and get 3 snowballs and 2 small twigs if you can find them. Bring them inside and construct a snowman in a bowl or small bin. Use buttons, cut out paper shapes, etc. to decorate. You can keep the snowman in the freezer and bring him out to play when you would like.

Shaving Cream Snow
You'll need a can or two of shaving cream and a table. Spray shaving cream all over the table top and let the kids create snow scenes with the cream. They can make hills and mounds etc. You can use little figures, bath or sand toys with it.

You will need:
small paper bag
red/brown paint
green construction paper
newspaper
rubber band

How to make it:
-
Take a small lunch bag and stuff it with newspaper.
- Tie a rubber band around the top of the bag leaving some bag at the top for a stem.
- Next, paint below the rubber band red for the apple and the top stem should be painted brown.
- After this dries, you can cut out and attach a green construction paper leaf.

Apple Lacing

Borrowed from: http://www.dltk-holidays.com/fall/mlacing.htm

Apple:  lace with a running stitch or a blanket stitch around the edge of the apple, skipping the stem.  This is a perfect template for lacing two together to make a 'pouch' that you can slip autumn poems, drawings, sayings, etc into.  For a more advanced project, trace the template onto red fun foam twice.  Use green felt or paint to add a stem.  Lace the fun foam together to make a purse.  Make a purse strap from a long piece of wool or ribbon that you can braid and/or add beads to.

Template can be found at: http://www.dltk-holidays.com/t.asp?b=m&t=http://www.dltk-holidays.com/fall/images/b-lacing3.gif

3 Things to do with Apples

Taken from: http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/3-things-to-do-with-apples-710710/

Shrink 'em

Who wouldn't love to have these creepy characters hanging around? To bring them to life, peel the apples, then use a small knife to carve faces (for well-defined features, cut out deep eye sockets and leave prominent noses). Bake the carved apples at your oven's lowest temperature for three hours, then let them sit in a warm, dry place for at least a few days. Once they're dry and shrunken, press black-bean eyes and rice-grain teeth into place. We also pressed on bundled-yarn wigs and tied on fabric strips cut from bandannas.

Bake 'em

This classic dessert is gooey and delicious, and our version can be cooked by kids with just a little help from a parent. To make it, heat the oven to 350 degrees. In a saucepan, stir together 1 cup of brown sugar, 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of butter, and a pinch each of nutmeg and cinnamon. Bring this mixture to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes to make a syrup. Core and peel the top third of 4 baking apples, such as Cortlands. Place them in a baking pan, fill them with raisins and walnuts, then pour the syrup over them. Bake the apples for 40 minutes. Serve them warm -- topped with ice cream, if you like.

Print 'em

Brushing paint on a cut apple gives our fruit-tastic stationery its crisp lines. Cut a round apple in half, then poke out its seeds with a toothpick and set them aside. Blot the cut surface with a paper towel until it's dry. Brush white acrylic paint all over the cut surface, then add a line of red or green paint around the edge. If the stem is attached, brush brown paint on it. Stamp the apple on a folded piece of card stock. To print the seeds, spear one with a pin, then dip it in brown paint and stamp it where desired.

Styling Book Covers

Taken from: http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/family/back-to-school-crafts3.htm

These Styling Book Covers make schoolbooks look great and are a good back-to-school craft for older kids.

What You'll Need:

  • Thin cardboard
  • Felt
  • Fabric
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Elastic strips
  • Needle and thread

Step 1: For each book you want to cover, open the book and lay it flat with the back and front covers facing you. Cut a piece of thin cardboard to fit over the book's surface. Cut your piece about 1/2 inch larger at the sides.

Step 2: Make 2 creases in the middle of the cardboard (the width of the spine) so that it will bend easily when the book is opened and closed.

Step 3: Glue a piece of fabric or felt onto the cardboard. Make sure the cloth is at least 1 inch larger than the cardboard all around.

Step 4: Fold the extra fabric on the other side of the cardboard, and glue it in place.

Step 5: Cover the remaining cardboard by gluing another piece of felt or fabric onto it.

Step 6: A couple inches from either end, sew an elastic strip top to the bottom on the inside of the book cover you just made -- be sure the elastic is stretched a bit so the book cover stays in place.

Step 7: Slide the front and back covers of your schoolbook into these strips to hold the book in place.

Step 8: Decorate the outside of your new book cover with felt cutouts.

Now you're ready to go back to school in style!

Coffee Filter Butterfly

Borrowed from: http://crafts.kaboose.com/butterfly1.html

You will need:

  • ½ black chenille stem
  • Paper coffee filter
  • Water color paints
  • Paint brush
  • Water

How to make it:

  1. Flatten the coffee filter and place it on a plate or newspaper, the paint and water will soak through. Set aside on paper towels to dry.
  2. Fold the chenille stem in half. Remember, you are only using half of a chenille stem to begin with.
  3. Fold the coffee filter accordion style, in about ½" pleats.
  4. Position the pleated coffee filter into the bent end of the chenille stem. Center the filter at the bend.
  5. Twist the chenille stem around the filter to secure it in place.
  6. Bend the tips of the chenille stems over about ¼" to create the antennae.
  7. Fan out the butterfly wings.
  8. If desired, hang with yarn or fishing line.

Tips:

  • For a more vibrant butterfly, be sure to paint all white areas with paint.
  • Tie a piece of fishing line around the "neck" and suspend from the ceiling. They will look like they are flying!
  • Instead of using all the colors on one filter, make some with warm colors (red, yellow, orange) and some with cool colors (blue, green, purple).

Handprint Poem:

I miss you when we're not together
I'm growing up so fast
See how big I've gotten
Since you saw me last?
As I grow, I'll change a lot,
The years will fly right by.
You'll wonder how I grew so quick
When and where and why?
So look upon this handprint  (make a handprint using paint and construction paper or paint and a paper plate)
That's hanging on your wall.
And memories will come back of me,
When I was very small.

Mother's Day was May 9th

A Recipe for a Very Dear Mother
Take a cup of thoughtfulness
And add a lot of love,
Blend with smiles as warming
As the sunshine from above,
Add a cheerful spirit
And, of course, a heart that sings
And also the ability
To laugh at little things,
Stir in lots of tenderness
And understanding, too
And there you have the recipe
For mothers dear as you.
